Flying Spaghetti Monster

Does your “science” curriculum include equal time for Flying Spaghetti Monster theory? No? Why? Too dogmatic? Intelligent design is not science and has no place in any science curriculum. Evolutionary biology is not dogma, it is theory supported by overwhelming scientific evidence from many fields, including physics, geology, microbiology, biochemistry, paleontology, genetics and others, unlike intelligent design which is simply creationism shrouded in pseudo-scientific technobabble. Be honest!

Back to School: A new way to frame science

Last week my youngest daughter went back to school, and this week my two college-aged children will begin their university classes. All across the United States, and in many countries across the world, students are gearing up for school. Students will learn reading, writing, languages, economics and, in many cases, science. Yet, the kind of science a student learns will depend largely on how science is framed by the school or teacher.

Everyday Science: Talking to the doctor

Going to the doctor can be a frustrating and often bewildering experience. Not only is the language used to describe medical procedures, medications, and diagnoses particularly impenetrable for the average adult, but the doctors themselves tend to speak in “code” making the exchange even more unnerving.
